Techniques in Educational Evaluation

I learned the basic concepts and procedures for conducting evaluations. This course presented step-by-step guidelines and other resources for planning, implementing, managing, and evaluating program-level evaluations. I worked collaboratively with my team to systematically design an evaluation plan.

Projects

My Experience

Before we were assigned to groups, determining the evaluability and feasibility of an instructional material was an overwhelming task for me because I first had to possess the insight of the required course readings and my chosen instructional material to be evaluated.

When I chose the project topic that was not in my area of knowledge, it was a daunting task to determine which instructional materials are of utmost importance. Significant challenges that I, and my team, faced were tight schedules and short project deadlines as we often required more time. By the collaborative effort of our team and after receiving timely feedback and guidance from the professor, we were able to narrow the scope of the instructional material to focus on one aspect of the evaluation. From this experience, I learned to take these restrictions into consideration when determining the scope of any evaluation.

It is essential to understand the rationale behind developing an evaluation plan, the key elements that should be included, and the steps required in developing it. By identifying evaluation questions early in the process, we can be prepared to design tools, instruments, and methodologies required to gather the needed information. The questions, however, may require revisions every now and then depending on the status of the project. If you don’t use the right data collection methods, you don’t understand how to properly and correctly identify data, you don’t have a thorough understanding of outputs and outcomes, then you won’t have an effective or positive evaluation experience.

Overall, this course and my experience in group and individual projects provided me the knowledge of basic concepts and procedures for conducting evaluations, which focuses primarily on program-level evaluations.
