Personal Statement

Hi, I'm Raen. I am one of the ones who "stumbled" into the ID world. I was unaware that this career even existed until I started looking for a Master's program.

After spending 5 years as an ESL/ EFL instructor to improve students' English conversation skills in Japan, I decided to embark on a new adventure and moved to the US. I worked as a part-time remote College Instructor to undergraduate students, and I've accumulated a total of 7 years of experience as an educator.  I'm adept in all aspects of activities in the four areas of language teaching and combined with a passion for helping students to achieve proficiency in a foreign/second language. I believe that the communication and interpersonal skills I acquired from my teaching experience and the knowledge and skills I acquired from IDD&E program will aid me in transitioning to the Instructional Design field.

My main goal for the program is discovering how I can incorporate IDD&E principles in my future workplace and contribute to aspects of language teaching. My Instructional Designer career plans are currently to apply the theories behind Instructional Design, utilize more educational technologies, and learn to create effective eLearning courses. There are a lot of former teachers who have pivoted to instructional design, and I think it’s becoming more of a common career move among teachers like me, since there's a lot of transferable skills, I believe, I can bring into the ID field.

In the next one to two years, I plan to look for an ID related job so that I can apply the best practices and other strategies/ techniques I learned into future course creations as I aspire to create online courses.
